Blood and Guts: Helena Lazaro
Cinco de Mayo Means Mayhem
May 5, 2004 02:37 PM

I can't begin to describe what is going on here right now. I wish I had a camera. Or a tape recorder. Let's just say that I'm drinking a margarita. At the front desk. Between sips, if I can hear the ringing, I manage to answer the phone. I try to make out what callers are saying over the strains of Guantanamera, which is being played by the mariachi band near the front door. This morning at about 9am, the facilities department came in and started hanging various strings of lights, flags, and mylar streamers in the shapes of chili peppers, Mexican flags, sombreros, and maracas. Ay, ay, ay!

I was going to write about how I'm thinking of making this site a typepad one...or about this really great movie I saw, Goodby Lenin, or about this screwed up movie I rented, Thirteen...but, how can I? As MSN News pointed out when I logged into hotmail, May 5th is Cinco de Mayo! In the accompanying piece, they invited me to "Trace my Mexican Roots," directly over an article posing the question, "Can you afford a maid?" I say nothing. But you'd think someone might have spotted that and thought better of it this morning at the MSN compound.
