I'm No Saint...I'm Three!
April 18, 2005 06:40 PM

So I was poking around and found out that I am named after not one, or two, but THREE saints. The Catholic patronage and meanings are ok, but the Santeria ones are even cooler. Note: I should clarify. As my mother observed, I am not name FOR the saints (first name for Helen of Troy and given the middle name of my grandmother). That would be plain crazy. I am talking about the origins of the names. Thanks mom, I don't know what I'd do without you reading my blog.

Saint Helena: in Catholicism, Patron of Divorced People and Troubled Marriages. Yay! In Santeria, she is related to love and relationships, and invoked to mend ailing love or lost love.

Saint Lazaro: in Catholicism, Patron of Lepers. Yum! In Santeria, (called Babalu Aye), "healer of physical and spiritual pain," and "the father of the world." Babalu...you know, like the song--I bet you didn't realize that this latin voodoo has been subversively corrupting god-fearing minds through innocuous television programming, even before color TV! Read more about The Lure of Santeria to learn how YOU can spot signs of this seemingly harmless idolatry entering your mainstream culture. Thank you, Watchtower.

Cecilia (my middle name), I looked up just for kicks. Sho 'nuff, she's a Saint too...not only a Saint, but a virgin martyr who had promised her, uh, gift, to God. Parton of poets and musicians.

Now I feel a little spooked. But, I think this proves beyond a doubt just how Brown I am on the inside! How many of you all are named for Saints times Three?? You should find out. I will make a sweet rosary for anyone* who can tell me that all their names are Saints, too.

*Limitation of Eligibility: We regret to state that anyone who has ever been hit with a shoe/sandal is ineligible for this prize. If you don't like it, have your cousin take it up with me.

Don't even dream of that!!!You were named after Helen Of Troy and Cecilia was my getting back at your Dad by giving you at least ONE of MY mother's name.

I got two out of three. Alfonso and David. Looks like there's the Venerable Solanus Casey waiting for beatification...

they, mistakenly, actually call me "helen of troy" all the time and for a long time I did not know there was a st helena who was, ironically, patron saint of divercees..... I've had broken love affairs all my life and my aunt told me it was my destiny fo never have a permanent partner. I'm starting to bekieve it, although I'm fighting hard not to. Interesting bit is I end up consoling other people- many during their heartaching moments. Did my dad senseany of this when he named me, or did he condemn me to this? I know he loved me too much to have done so. My mum, on the other hand, who had do say in my naming, just might have better fit this role.

Just some musings. I love my name, though.
Cheers
